Anytime is a good time for a deep residential cleaning

Cleaning house with SERVPRO team Residential spring cleaning for this homeowner includes removing years of nicotine buildup on ceilings and walls.

Ceilings and Walls

Ceiling and wall cleaning should be part of the cleaning maintenance of your home or business. You should also clean the walls before painting so that the primer and paint can adhere properly. Whether you are preparing to paint or just looking for professional cleaning, SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County can help.

Ceilings and walls are exposed to dirt and dust, pet dander, cooking oils and grease, cigarette smoke, and other contaminants. Your heating and air conditioning system can distribute these contaminants throughout your property.

Using SERVPRO’s time-tested and industry-approved steps, along with our proprietary cleaning products and methods, we strive to restore your ceilings and walls without the need to repaint or refinish and to help the entire property smell fresh.

Hard Floors

Hard flooring, like hardwood and tile, is often used in today’s homes and commercial properties. At first glance, hard flooring appears to be easy to clean, maintain, and restore. However, these materials tend to have soil accumulate over time, and eventually, you’ll need professional cleaning to remove this buildup.

We have specialized training in time-tested and industry-approved cleaning methods. Also, our proprietary cleaning system allows our Professionals to properly clean and restore your floor’s original beauty.

Energy Saving Tips for Lufkin Texas

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO logo in front of sunny background We also provide HVAC and vent cleaning services! For more information on HVAC and air duct cleaning, call us today, (936) 559-0404.

Although we have had some crazy cold winter months, it’s shaping up to be a very hot summer. To anyone who’s lived in East Texas for any amount of time however, that comes as no surprise. What’s the average Joe’s solution to the heat dilemma? Well, cranking the A/C all the way up of course. While this is not the worst solution, it’s certainly not very energy efficient. So, I’ve compiled a short list to help of energy saving tricks to hopefully save you some money this summer by lowering your energy usage.

Ensure air conditioning vents are unobstructed and opened to full capacity.

Get your air conditioning unit serviced to ensure it’s working efficiently.

Clean range-hood grease filter to ensure proper ventilation.

Vacuum refrigerator condenser coils to improve efficiency.

Remember that dark colors absorb heat. You can repel excess heat by using light-colored blinds, shades and draperies on the sunny sides of the house. Make sure the draperies are insulated or lined.

Use natural lighting early in the day to reduce your energy usage.

Use ventilated awnings and other shading devices to prevent heat from entering windows exposed to direct sunlight.

Perform activities such as mopping and washing dishes in the coolest part of the day. These tasks add moisture - and heat - to your home in the summer.

Use a bathroom exhaust fan or open a window to remove heat and moisture when the bathroom door is closed. This spares the air conditioner extra work.

Use your kitchen exhaust fan while cooking to remove excess heat, moisture and cooking odors. But don't let it run more than 15 minutes after cooking or it will be taking out conditioned air.

Try setting the thermostat at 78 degrees or above during the summer. If you have a ceiling fan, you may be able to raise the temperature to 80 degrees or higher.

Set the thermostat and then forget it. If you change the temperature often during the day, you are more likely to waste energy.

Hang laundry outside to dry during the warm weather. Running the dryer raises the overall temperature of the house and requires a great deal of electricity.

-Cameron S.

We had a water backup in our basement after heavy storms came through. We were one of many who needed help and were placed on a wait list. Candice and Patrick came to our rescue all the way to Columbus OH. They were so nice and helpful and got our job started quickly! Their team explained everything about the process and came to our house every day to check on things and make adjustments. They cleaned everything before they left as if they weren't even there. We are very happy with the results! Thank you guys!!

-Alexandra V.

SERVPRO came to my rescue and dried out my basement after another flooding. (2nd flooding in less than 2 months). I had used another company for the 1st flood and was very unhappy with their service. With SERVPRO I was quoted a fair price and they delivered what they promised. Every day when they came to check the progress they would thoroughly mop & disinfect the floors and left them in better condition than when they started. The men who worked in our house were very professional, made sure we were satisfied with their service; we would not and will not hesitate to use them again.

What is Water Mitigation?

7/17/2020 (Permalink)

Question: What is Water Mitigation?

Answer: Water mitigation is the act of preventing water from causing further damage to your property and provides moisture removal and control.

Let us talk about water damage statistics really quick.

"When you consider the statistics, it becomes clear just how common and devastating a problem water damage can be. According to industry estimates, 14,000 people in the US experience a water damage emergency at home or work each day, and 98% of basements in the US will suffer from some type of water damage during their lifetime."

Luckily basements are not too common here in East Texas but it does not take a basement to house water pipes and an estimated 250 gallons a day could leak from one 1/8 inch crack if left untreated.

Water Damage is serious business, call SERVPRO to help if you have water mitigation needs today!

Laundry Room Safety

7/10/2020 (Permalink)

When you’re thinking about household fire hazards, you probably think about your kitchen, fire place, or electrical system. But do you ever think about your laundry room? According to U.S. Fire Administration, home dryer fires cause $35 million in property loss.

The most common reason for these fires by far is dirty or congested dryer vents and ducts. To reduce the risk of these fires happening, hire a professional cleaning and restoration company like SERVPRO® to clean your ducts when you notice your clothes are taking longer than normal to dry.

Other safety tips for your dryer from the National Fire Protection Agency include

  • Cleaning the lint filter before and after each load. Purchase a vent brush (it’s like a giant bottle brush) to use between professional cleanings.
  • Making sure the outdoor vent flap will open and is not blocked by a bird’s nest or other potential obstacles
  • Keep your laundry room tidy. Don’t leave laundry or old lint near the machine where they could be ignited by an overheating machine.
  • Never run the dryer while you’re sleeping or away from home.

For more information on cleaning dryer vents contact SERVPRO of Lufkin at 936-559-0404. We are always here to help!

Essential Ways to Prevent a Sewage Backup

7/8/2020 (Permalink)

A sewage backup is something that no Deep East Texas homeowner wants to experience. Not only can this water be difficult to clean up, but it can also cause lasting damage to your property. While it is possible to repair the damage, it is best to prevent it from occurring in the first place. The following are a few ways that you can do that.

1. Dispose of Items Properly
There are only a select few items that are designed to be flushed down your toilet or poured down your kitchen sink. Disposing of other things in this way can cause a backup. Make sure you are not flushing napkins, paper towels, or other products that do not disintegrate quickly. You should also refrain from pouring grease or food down the drain.

2. Remove Plant Roots
Plants can be drawn to the moisture in your pipes and begin growing their roots there. This can make it difficult for the water to drain, resulting in flooding in your yard or in your home. Check for overgrown roots and remove these when necessary.

3. Unclog Your Drains
If there is nothing on the outside affecting your pipes, then you might simply have a clog. If you cannot identify the source of your backup, this is likely the case. Use chemical cleaners or a plumbing snake to remove anything that may be blocking the pipes.

4. Maintain Pipes Regularly
Storm damage, plants, and aging can result in your pipes not performing as well as they should. If your pipes are broken or blocked, water will not be able to move through them efficiently. In some cases, repairs can be done, but your pipes may need to be replaced depending on their type and age as well as the severity of the damage.
If clogged or broken pipes result in water overflowing into your bathroom or kitchen, you may need to have sewer cleaning done by a professional. A cleanup and restoration company can remove water and can make repairs to return your home to its previous condition.

Mold in your crawlspace in Lufkin, TX

7/8/2020 (Permalink)

Many people don't often think about the spaces under their homes in Lufkin, TX. However, just because you may not think about the spaces under your home doesn't mean problems may not occur there. As a homeowner, it can be wise to know what common issues, such as mold growth, could be affecting your home's crawlspace.

1. The Areas Under Homes Are Frequently the First to Acquire Water or Mold Damage

When flooding occurs, areas closest to the ground are most likely to sustain damage first. As a result, mold growth is likely to appear in areas under your home. However, other issues can also encourage mold growth under your home. Rain spouts that aren't diverted in a direction away from your home can cause water to build up under your house, and pipe leaks are another common cause of damage.

2. The Damage May Go Unnoticed

Many homeowners avoid going under their homes when possible, and since your crawlspace is not easily visible, the area may sustain damage without you noticing. Though you are likely to notice if a flood has affected the structure of your house, a slow pipe leak can result in equal amounts of damage. Keeping track of your water bills and looking out for unexplained increases in cost can help you to notice a leak before it's too late.

3. Media Blasting Can Be Beneficial

If the underside of your home has been affected by mold, restoration and sanitation can be difficult. However, mold remediation experts often use a method known as media blasting when removing mold from small spaces underneath houses. As the name suggests, media blasting entails blasting baking soda onto moldy surfaces. Then, specialized vacuums help to contain any remaining mold spores.

It's often useful to know about issues that could affect your home's crawlspace, as well as solutions that can fix common problems. Knowing that areas under your home are prone to damage, that problems can often go unnoticed and the benefits of media blasting can help you better prepare for any potential issues under your home.

An Unclean Air Duct

4/22/2020 (Permalink)

A dirty, unclean air duct filled with mold, dirt, and other harmful things. Air Ducts can be the last thing you think about to clean.

It’s East Texas and the calendar is inching us closer and closer to the Summer months. After a cool Winter, many will be turning their air conditioners on more and more as the temperature rises. But, indoor air can get polluted with dust, allergens, and other small particles. If you are concerned about your indoor air quality, you might benefit from having your air ducts cleaned. Having your air ducts professionally cleaned may make a difference in the overall quality of your indoor air. And, cleaning your air ducts may also help your HVAC system function more efficiently.

When it comes to air duct cleaning, homeowners often have many questions. Here are a few of the most common:

Does a professional air duct cleaning really make a difference?
A professional air duct cleaning can benefit you in more than one way. First, the cleaning will remove dust, debris and other pollutants from your air duct system. This can be beneficial to anyone living in the home who suffers from allergies, has breathing problems, or is sensitive to pollutants. Second, clean air ducts can result in a more efficient HVAC system. When your home’s ventilation system is clean, it can function more efficiently – which may ultimately save you money on your monthly energy bill.

How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?
Unless you are in the midst of a home renovation project or you live in an area with extremely high pollution, you should not need to clean your air ducts more than once a year. In fact, after your air ducts are professionally cleaned, you may not need another thorough cleaning for several years. For advice on how often you should have your air ducts cleaned, make sure to ask your air conditioner repair company. If the air conditioner company does not offer air duct cleaning services, they should be able to provide you with the name of a reputable company to call.

Can I clean the air ducts in my home myself?
Many homeowners wonder if they can clean their home’s air ducts with their own vacuum cleaner. In reality, it is practically impossible to clean an air duct system with a regular vacuum. Air duct cleaning companies use special equipment that is designed to specifically clean air ducts. As a homeowner, one of the best things you can do to prevent pollutants from infiltrating your air ducts is regularly change your HVAC system’s air filters.

Is a professional air duct cleaning expensive?
The cost of air duct cleaning services varies. Factors that are taken into consideration when an air duct cleaning company provides you with a quote include the number of air ducts in your home, the age of your home, the length of time since the air ducts were last cleaned, the current condition of the air ducts, and more.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

The 4 Primary Classifications of Water Damage

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

The 4 Primary Classifications of Water Damage

Class 1 is the least amount of water, absorption and evaporation.  It affects only part of a room or area, or larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture.  Little or no wet carpet and/or cushion is present.

Class 2 involves a large amount of water, absorption and evaporation.  It affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion (pad).  Water has wicked up walls less than 24 inches.  There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.

Class 3 involves the greatest amount of water, absorption and evaporation.  Water may have come from overhead.  Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushion and subfloor in virtually all of the entire area are saturated.

Class 4 relates to specialty drying situations.  Wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (eg. hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, light-weight concrete and stone).  Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity.  These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

*Refer to the IICRC S500 for complete definitions.

No one expects pipes to burst, water heaters to break, or toilets and washers to overflow.  If this happens, your quick response along with the highly trained specialists from SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County will limit your damages and potentially save you thousands of dollars!

How To Safely Remove Odors, Kill Germs And Clean The Air In Nacogdoches, Texas

A SERVPRO fan drying flooring 5,000 cfm max fan output, 40,000 cubic feet maxi treatment area, 8,000 hour optimum performance bulb life & Permanent washable electrostatic filter

The Hydroxyl Generator is one of the most scientifically-advanced pieces of equipment we use to combat malodors and leave a property deodorized following biohazard, fire or water damage events.

The main benefit of using a true hydroxyl generator is that they are safe to use in occupied areas for deodorization purposes. For insurance companies and commercial businesses alike, they love this machine because it means less out of pocket expenses and henceforth, less business disruption!

These generators have been successfully tested on fires and other restoration and bio jobs, including protein fires, floods, dead body situations, skunk odors, pet urine odors, musty odors and many types of odors. However, it’s important to note that hydroxyl generators are not intended for use on mold remediation jobs where there is a large infestation on surfaces or behind walls. The established protocols should always be followed in these instances. But generators with good filtration are excellent for airborne microbial remediation where bacteria or fungi have become aerosolized.

Here’s a rundown of some additional facts in order to give you the inside scoop, should you ever need to reach out to us for smoke/soot deodorization needs:

How it Works:

  • UVA rays are emitted from the titanium dioxide photocatalytic lamps (wow, that was a mouthful) where they then pass through a permanent anatase coated super reactor screen, forming electron hole pairs that react with water and oxygen in the air to form free electrons and hydroxyl radicals that then decompose and eliminate organic and inorganic gases and air pollutants. Wow, trying saying all that in one breath!

 Applications:

  • Use on fire and flood damage restoration jobs
  • Use to destroy odors from cigarette smoke, dead body, urine, garbage, airborne VOCs and more

As always, if you want to learn more about any of our SERVPRO of Lufkin/S.Nacogdoches County pieces of restoration hardware, feel free to reach out. We have helpful staff willing to explain further any of our services – (936) 559-0404.

Disaster Tips

1- Photograph and Document Damage:     Document the damage thoroughly with photos, as it will make the insurance claims process much easier. In addition to photos, keep a running list of all damaged items.

2-Conduct Emergency Repairs:                    Do only what's necessary to prevent further damage after a storm, such as covering broken windows with plastic or roofs with tarps to keep rain out. Don’t make or commission permanent repairs until an insurance adjuster reviews the damage. While it may be tempting to start cleaning up and throwing out damaged items after the storm, your insurance adjuster needs to see what happened firsthand to make you the best offer to settle your claim.

3- Secure Home Inventory:  All home insurance policyholders should compile a home inventory of their possessions before a storm strikes, and keep it in a safe place. A home inventory is a list that documents the contents of your home. It should include photos, detailed descriptions, and purchase receipts when possible. Having a home inventory will make the claims process much easier. If you don’t currently keep a home inventory, start one as soon as possible.

4- File a Claim ASAP: Insurance companies sometimes work on a first-come, first-served basis; so it's in your best interest to file an insurance claim as soon as possible. When you contact your provider, let them know the extent of the damages and that you have an inventory of your possessions. An insurance adjuster will come to your property, assess the damage, and determine the size of your payout.

5- Secure Safe Lodging:  If you home is uninhabitable, you’ll need to find your family a safe place to stay while your home is being repaired. The loss of use coverage in a standard homeowner insurance policy typically helps pay for your family's lodging as long as the damage is part of a covered claim. Check your policy or ask your agent to make sure you have this coverage and to determine its monetary value and time limits.

Suffering damage or loss from storms can be devastating, and recovery takes time. If you are prepared and plan in advance, repairing the damage will go much smoother.

Remember to be patient during the claims process. With the proper preparation, things will be back to normal soon.

Potenial Mold Dangers In Lufkin, Texas

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

Mold covering a large section of a ceiling Don't let mold in your home take root.

For most Lufkin homeowners, mold is not even on the list of dangers to their residences. Fire and especially flooding are what occupies most people’s concerns over their home and checkbook. What many forget is that mold can grow unnoticed for years to become just as expansive and expensive a threat.

So why use SERVPRO for cleaning and removing mold from your Lufkin home? Our restoration teams train to the latest industry standards for cleaning and remediation. Our office maintains an extensive inventory of cleaners and equipment for a rapid response. If we do need additional, specialized tools, our access to a national support network ensures we can get everything we need in usually only a day.

The first step our technicians take is to isolate the mold infested areas from the rest of your home. They turn off the HVAC system and, if the ducts are clear of mold, cover the vents with plastic to prevent contaminating them while cleaning. As they do this, other team members seal off the affected area with heavy, plastic sheets and set up a combination of air movers and fans to create negative air pressure and direct loose spores out of your home.

Now, our restoration team removes mold from surfaces in the affected area. The type of surface determines what tools we use. If a surface is metal, glass or plastic, it is non-porous, which means the mold rarely penetrates the surface. Our technicians can wipe these surfaces free of the mold using cloths or sponges. For thicker layers, they may need to use water or a mild cleaning agent to break them up for removal.

For items like carpets, wood, or building materials like drywall, mold often grows or settles into the surface. These are porous surfaces and are harder to clean. SERVPRO technicians must use stronger cleaning agents and a brush to agitate the mold to draw it out. In many cases, especially with drywall, we recommend disposal since it is cheaper to replace the items than expend the labor hours to restore them.

Afterward, we wait for any spores disturbed by our efforts to settle on surfaces. Our teams use vacuums with special, HEPA filters designed to draw out even a single mold spore from a table or chair. They finish by wiping down the surfaces and then repeat these last actions until the air mold content tests at a safe level.

At SERVPRO of Lufkin/ S. Nacogdoches County, our goal is to get you back into your home quickly and safely. If you think there is mold in your home, call us at 936-559-0404 to schedule a visit.

Professional Water Damage Restoration Services for Lufkin Residents

8/1/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage can leave behind unpleasant odors, SERVPRO has the professional equipment to rid your home of these unwanted smells.

As a property owner in Lufkin, you can struggle to combat the resulting smells after a water damage disaster. You may lack the skills to identify all the sources of the odors. To professionally solve the stress, it is advisable to work with trained restorers who use specialized tools to deal with the problems.

Usually, the wet materials that are left behind after a water damage incident bring about unpleasant odors. That means returning the moisture to normal levels does away with most of the smells. Though that is the case, not all smells completely disappear. That is why service providers like SERVPRO that operate in Lufkin use multiple approaches to mitigate the odors with less chance of returning.

Sometimes a customer can complain of imaginary and real smells; this is when experts from a company like SERVPRO decide to use masking agents. We work by releasing a pleasing scent that covers the bad odors. Absorption and filtration agents can be used to serve the same purpose with the main difference being the manner in which they work. When we use them, absorption of some oils, humidity, and moisture takes place. The restoration process can also make use of pairing agents, disinfectants, sanitizers, as well as electrically generated deodorizers.

Imagined and real odors are the main types of smells that SERVPRO work towards eliminating. Actual substances cause real odors while on the other hand, thoughts of people trigger the psychological or imaginary smells. Irrespective of the situation at hand, our trained professionals are equipped with the right tools and skills to do the needed deodorization.

Drying and water removal are critical when mitigating water damage disasters. Reporting the incidents to our certified professionals at SERVPRO should be done as soon as possible so that the correct restoration procedures can start.

At SERVPRO of Lufkin/ S. Nacogdoches County, we respond to all storm, water, mold and fire damage disasters with urgency. Call us at (936) 559-0404 to learn more about the professional options at your disposal.
