Flooded Business?

8/1/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Flooded Business? Business owners understand why they need to mitigate against flood risk and some of the challenges they may face.

Floods can occur anywhere, often with little or no warning, and with devastating consequences. Protecting the bottom line in order to remain open, or to re-open quickly after a flood disaster, requires taking steps now to prevent or reduce flood damage should your business be in the path of rising water.

Types Of Flooding

Topography and weather conditions play a prominent role in the impact different types of flooding have on specific locales. The following are some examples of specific types of flooding.

  • Rising water may be the greatest risk to inland areas away from a river bed after a heavy snow pack begins to melt or after heavy rainfall.
  • Moving water is a serious risk in areas near rivers or in coastal storm surge areas because it creates significantly larger lateral forces on a building.
  • Overtopping, breaching or opening of dams, levees, and other flood control mechanisms, which are designed to divert the flow of water to provide protection, can lead to flood damage that may be more significant than if the levees were never installed. The Mississippi and Missouri River floods of 2011 included breaches of levees, as well as controlled flooding by the opening of various flood gates on levees. The result was thousands of acres of farmland, crops, livestock and fish farms being destroyed to protect urban areas.
  • Flash flooding can occur in every region as a result of slow-moving thunderstorms or excessive rainfall from any storm system.
  • Large, slow-moving tropical storms can dump excessive amounts of rain on coastal locations and then move inland to continue the devastation, resulting in widespread flood damage.

Protein Fires in Lufkin Texas: What Are They and How Are They Treated?

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Protein Fires in Lufkin Texas: What Are They and How Are They Treated? Protein Fires in Lufkin Texas: What Are They and How Are They Treated?

Protein fires create an especially unique restoration challenge. Fire damage caused by burnt food can also create odor issues which are difficult to mitigate. Here are some important facts regarding this type of fire.

  1. Protein fires generally leave little visible residue, often confusing the untrained observer
  2. They create a significantly more repugnant smell than most other fires
  3. The nature of the burn causes the odor to permeate structure and furniture even more completely than other fires
  4. Require extremely thorough cleaning to remove the odor
  5. Sometimes require a sealing agent or even repainting to completely eradicate the odor
  6. May require multiple attempts and methods to achieve customer satisfaction

It is also important to recognize that perception of odor is highly individual.  There are no tools available to “measure” smell, and as a result, a homeowner may perceive odors that technicians or even neighbors cannot.  Often times, because of the strong link between smell and memory, a homeowner may experience “phantom odors” where the memory of the event causes reproduction of the odor even after thorough cleaning.

Summer Grilling Safety Tips

7/2/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Summer Grilling Safety Tips Don't let this happen to you... Some basic tips on how to prepare your grill before your first cookout of the season.
Fire in the grill, under hot dogs and burgers, is a welcome sight at the family cookout. But fire anywhere else can make your summer kick-off barbecue memorable for all the wrong reasons. To keep you and your family safe while grilling, follow these general guidelines. Here are some basic tips on how to prepare your grill before your first cookout of the season.

General grilling tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

Propane grills

Before you use your grill:

Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.

  • Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks. To do that:
    • Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.
    • Turn the propane tank on. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles around the hose (big enough to see).
    • If there are no bubbles, your grill is safe to use.
  • If there are bubbles, turn off the tank and check connections, then have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately.

When the grill is on:

  • As you are cooking, if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.
  • If the leak stops immediately, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the smell continues, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.

Charcoal grills

  • There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Lufkin Restaurant Suffers Fire Damage

Commercial Lufkin Restaurant Suffers Fire Damage Lufkin Restaurant Suffers Fire Damage

After the fire trucks leave, your business likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County have the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your business to pre-fire condition.

Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call Today – (936) 559-0404

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Be Aware of What Contaminants are in Flood/Black Water

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Be Aware of What Contaminants are in Flood/Black Water The dark water makes it nearly impossible to see what is underneath.

Contaminated Flood Waters Contain Pathogens and Dangerous Debris

When we respond to a case of flood damage due to a storm, one of the most frequent questions our technicians get is, "What is black water?", Black water is heavily contaminated water which is not only unsafe to drink but can also be hazardous simply to be around. It can be difficult to judge conditions in black water due to its typical gray, brown, or black coloration, with small particles often hiding potentially far greater hazards lying within. Here are a few things that can be found in a typical sample of black flood water.

Dirt and Soil: Typically, most of the coloration in black water comes from dirt and soil trapped within. Many cases of flood damage result from heavy storms and rain, and these floodwaters more often than not pick up significant amounts of soil before they ever reach a home. Although this dirt may sound harmless, it, in reality, makes the water much heavier and more difficult to navigate if you get caught in it.

Microorganisms in Black Water: Although the amount and type of organisms in flood can vary depending on its causes and specifics, almost all samples of black water contain very high levels of microorganisms. These may be parasites, bacteria, viruses, mold, or many other types of organism, and they may be able to cause health effects if ingested or absorbed through the skin. This is why it is never advised to drink flood waters and to seek medical attention immediately if you have.

Sharp Metal and Glass: It can be very difficult to see sharp objects in a mass of floodwater, but even if you feel you are confident that such materials are not in the water, it is best always to assume they are. Sharp materials, even if they are tiny, often constitute one of the water's greatest risks. If they open up a small cut or wound, this spot may go unnoticed by you but later on can possibly develop a bad infection. If you have been cut or had black water touch an open wound, immediately disinfect the wound and apply medical aid as needed.

SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County deals with flood damage so that you don't have to. If your home has been caught in a flood, call us at (936) 559-0404 for mitigation and restoration services.

What Exactly is Mold?

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation What Exactly is Mold? Though adorable, mold can be deadly.

Mold can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on. Bacteria can start to grow within hours and mold can start to grow within days. Mold spores can lay dormant for years until an ideal growing condition develops, in which they start to flourish. Especially during the summer, the warm humid conditions are a perfect microenvironment for mold growth.

When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur—particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture. Many types of molds exist. All molds have the potential to cause serious health effects. Molds can produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or even asthma attacks in people allergic to it. Others are known to produce potent toxins and/or irritants. Potential health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to remediate and clean any existing mold growth indoors. The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to prevent human exposure and damage to building materials and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold contamination, not just kill it. Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are still potentially toxic! Applying the appropriate restoration procedures within the first few hours of a water loss can save thousands of dollars in secondary damage.

Before the growth of mold becomes visible, there will be a faint musty or earthy smell. In time, mold will appear on the outside of the wall as a stain or discoloration. In a standard situation, SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County will examine the structure for any visible signs of mold and remove the mold growth and excess spores returning the area back to normal levels. Some situations require the assistance of an Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional (IEP) with specialized equipment and services needed to assess and/or repair the structure. IEPs can test and clear a structure for mold by collecting air and surface samples. Then they can determine whether the mold has been successfully decontaminated. We encourage you to call us today if you suspect a mold problem in your home or business. We handle mold remediation work on a daily basis and know when prompt action is required to prevent further mold growth. SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County technicians are trained to control microbial problems in structures by promptly drying wet or damp materials according to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards and removing or replacing wet or damp porous materials, like drywall, that have visible mold growth. Call today for an immediate response. We are here to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Mold is not Always Easy to Spot

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold is not Always Easy to Spot In one Nacogdoches home, mold was growing because of a leak in their ice-maker water line.

One of the most common problems that homeowners face are mold and mildew infestations. This fungus grows on anything and thrives anywhere it can find moisture, especially places that are damp, warm, poorly lit, and poorly ventilated. Not only does it produce a musty, unpleasant odor, but when left unchecked it can cause serious damage.

Mold is not limited to growing in obvious places, it can grow and thrive in the dark corners of your home. In one Nacogdoches home, mold was growing because of a leak in their ice-maker water line. These leaks can be small and hard to notice especially when they are behind walls.

Mold can spread throughout a property in as little as 48 hours. If you suspect you have mold in your Nacogdoches home, you should call us to inspect your home. If mold is found, we have the training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

How do We Neutralize Smoke Odors?

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage How do We Neutralize Smoke Odors? One of our SERVPRO ozone treatment rooms.

Only SERVPRO offers the very best in restoration services and one of the ways we do that is by using ozone.

Ozone will neutralize virtually all organic odors, specifically those that contain carbon as their base element. This will include all the bacteria and fungus groups as well as smoke, decay, and cooking odors.

Ozone is a toxic gas. However, it can be used safely when deployed by specialized generators under proper considerations. The benefits of using ozone for restoration work are fantastic. Smoke odor molecules that infiltrate all porous surfaces can be permanently removed by ozone gas. Only ozone will work on the most stubborn of all odor molecules, that being protein. Odors associated most forms of decay and like freezer failure have long resisted normal chemical deodorizing attempts. Ozone again has the potency to neutralize even these contaminants.  -

As experts in deodorization, SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County is trained to identify and eliminate offensive odors. The science of identifying and eliminating odors can be a tricky thing, so give us a call, and leave the restoration to us.

Be Prepared for the Most Common Forms of Water Damage

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Be Prepared for the Most Common Forms of Water Damage Water damage usually comes from malfunctioning home appliances, rather than from severe storms and floods.

When you think about residential water damage, you might dream up images of torrential rain or other natural catastrophes. However, the reality, unfortunately, is that damage which is caused when regular appliances in your home stop working properly, this can be just as destructive as a weather event which is severe. Water damage makes up for losses to renters and homeowners in the billions of dollars each year. It is responsible as well for around twenty-five percent of all insurance claims. Water is ten times more likely to damage your home than a fire.

There are fortunately steps you can make to help avoid water damage from appliances and keep your home protected. Understanding some of the common causes of water damage is helpful, and these can include leaking air condition condensation drains, baseboard heating, and failed washing machine hoses, water heaters, and plumbing.

There are not always warning signs offered by these household appliances until the damage has happened already. This is why it is important to check them regularly. The steps below are simple and can help protect your home from the causes of water damage which are most common.

-Know first where your main water supply is in case of an emergency
-If you’re going away for an extended amount of time, shut the water supply off and drain the pipes. If your house has a fire sprinkler system, however, do not turn the water off, and keep enough heat in the home to avoid any freezing up.
-Think about getting your air conditioning system regularly inspected by a professional. The drain lines should be checked annually and clean them out if they get clogged.
-Inspect showers, water heaters, toilets, tubs, dishwashers and sinks annually, and get them repaired if there are any signs of corrosion or leaks. Install water heaters when possible in areas with floor drains to lower damage if leaks do occur.
-Check the caulking around bathtubs, showers, toilet bases and sinks, and if needed make repairs.
-If there is an ice machine or water dispenser on your refrigerator, the hose between the refrigerator and wall should be constructed of braided copper, since this has a greater resistance to corrosion and cracking.
-Check your pipes for leaks and cracks. Have any damage to pipes, have them immediately fixed to avoid repairs in the future that are even more costly.
-Check plumbing fittings and appliance hoses for crimping, breakage or bending.

Sometimes, even after all your precaution, residential water damage can still occur. If this happens to you, call SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County today at: -(936) 559-0404

Water Damage Cold Winter Weather Could Cause Water Damage to Your Nacogdoches Home This is one the many broken pipes from the freeze.

Most of the time your water pipes are safe from freezing. But if they run through any part of the house that isn't heated, or if the heating system fails, the water inside can turn to ice. When water in a pipe freezes, it expands and puts tremendous pressure on both metal and plastic pipes. In the winter months your pipes are at even higher risk of bursting.

When your Lufkin home has water damage from flooding or leaks, we have the expertise and equipment to properly restore your property. The water removal and water cleanup process is completed by our highly-trained technicians who will document the drying process. This validates that your property has been dried properly and thoroughly.

With SERVPRO you won’t have to worry, even if the worst case scenario happens and your pipes do burst. SERVPRO will be ready as soon as you call us and be there to make it, "Like it never even happened.”

Summer Office Declutter Check List

6/1/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning Summer Office Declutter Check List Clean desks lead to more productivity, more productivity leads to raises, raises lead to island vacations!

Put Some Clean In Your Summer

Tips and tricks to help declutter your office.

Divide Your Workplace Into Zones: Determine how you want and need to use the space and set up zones for your daily functions. You may require a workspace for your computer, a library area for your research, a storage area for supplies and a filing area for your archives. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.

Keep Only What You Need At Arm's Length: Boxes of pens, stacks of papers and old coffee cups need to go. Rid your desk of visual clutter by paring down the items on top to the essentials only. Supplies, paperwork and personal items should be kept in the zones you've established for them.

Create A Daily Paper System: Consider creating hanging files or baskets labeled "To Read", "To Do", and "To File". Establish set days for each, so that you don't get behind or feel the overwhelming need to do everything at once.

Sort Your Catch-All Drawer: Use drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Go through the drawer every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn't being used.

Eliminate Digital Clutter: Digital clutter can be just as stressful as physical clutter. Storm Damage Inspection in Lufkin Texas

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Storm Damage Inspection in Lufkin Texas Understand Storm Damage Inspection in Lufkin Texas.

Even if you have no reason to suspect that damage occurred, check your home and its surroundings (once it’s safe to do so, of course). It’s important to identify problems, make emergency repairs and determine if an insurance claim is necessary.

SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County provides this list of Storm Problems areas.

Roof

Your roof might be the area of your home most vulnerable to damage in a storm, because so many things can impact it. Whether you’ve had high winds and downed tree branches or just a simple hailstorm, look for these indicators of damage:

  • Holes in the roof
  • Missing Shingles
  • Leaks in your roof or ceiling
  • Split seams

Building Exteriors

While siding, stucco and brick all are durable, they also are susceptible to storm damage. In some instances, homeowners don’t notice until it’s too late to file a claim, so check carefully for:

  • Cracking, chipping or dings and dents on siding. Even if there doesn’t appear to be damage at first, check again at a different time of day. You may see something you missed when the lighting is different.
  • Holes in stucco. This is a serious problem, even when small, so look closely. If you find holes, have a professional conduct a full property inspection.
  • Damaged brick and tuck pointing. While brick typically holds up well, a check can identify any problem areas.
  • Detached or damaged trim, gutters, etc.

Storm and flood damage require specialized restoration techniques and equipment. When a storm hits your Lufkin home, you need the company with storm damage experience and expertise. SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County can respond immediately to storm and flooding conditions.

Soot Cleanup & Removal Tips

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Soot Cleanup & Removal Tips Need soot cleaning or fire restoration services in Nacogdoches County?

Soot is the black residue left behind on fireplace walls and charcoal grills after the flames go out. A house fire creates a great deal of it because wood, plaster, natural fibers, synthetics, foams and plastics all create soot when they burn and most homes are full of these materials. Soot sticks to any surface that’s cooler than the fire itself, usually walls, ceilings and other hard surfaces.

Different types of fires produce different types of soot, which require different cleaning methods, so it’s best to leave it to the professionals. High oxygen fires produce soot that is best cleaned with a dry cleaning sponge or dry chemical sponge.  Low oxygen fires can be cleaned with a wet sponge. However, if soot from a high oxygen fire is cleaned with a wet sponge, it can smear and cause even more damage. If you do decide to vacuum up soot before the professionals arrive, do not use an ordinary household vacuum cleaner, which is not designed for that type of cleaning. Use a shop vac, or other type of heavy duty vacuum cleaner. Always hold the nozzle about a half inch away from the surface that’s being cleaned. Making contact with the soot can smear it and make an even bigger mess.

While waiting for experts to arrive, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Never touch anything during your initial inspection, to avoid spreading the soot.
  • Wear gloves, a mask and long sleeves and pants when working in soot covered room to protect your skin and lungs.
  • Keep the room ventilated to minimize breathing in soot particles and allow smoky smells to dissipate.
  • Remove as much debris as possible to allow for easy cleanup.

If you’ve just experienced a fire at your home or business in the Nacogdoches County area, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County.

Should you have your Commercial Air Ducts Cleaned?

5/11/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Should you have your Commercial Air Ducts Cleaned? Dirty HVAC VS Clean HVAC

Indoor air can get polluted with dust, allergens, and other small particles. If you are concerned about your indoor air quality, you might benefit from having your air ducts cleaned. Having your air ducts professionally cleaned may make a difference in the overall quality of your indoor air. And, cleaning your air ducts may also help your HVAC system function more efficiently.

When it comes to air duct cleaning, homeowners often have many questions. Here are a few of the most common:

Does a professional air duct cleaning really make a difference?
A professional air duct cleaning can benefit you in more than one way. First, the cleaning will remove dust, debris and other pollutants from your air duct system. This can be beneficial to anyone living in the home who suffers from allergies, has breathing problems, or is sensitive to pollutants. Second, clean air ducts can result in a more efficient HVAC system. When your home’s ventilation system is clean, it can function more efficiently – which may ultimately save you money on your monthly energy bill.

How often should I have my air ducts cleaned?
Unless you are in the midst of a home renovation project or you live in an area with extremely high pollution, you should not need to clean your air ducts more than once a year. In fact, after your air ducts are professionally cleaned, you may not need another thorough cleaning for several years. For advice on how often you should have your air ducts cleaned, make sure to ask your air conditioner repair company. If the air conditioner company does not offer air duct cleaning services, they should be able to provide you with the name of a reputable company to call.

Can I clean the air ducts in my home myself?
Many homeowners wonder if they can clean their home’s air ducts with their own vacuum cleaner. In reality, it is practically impossible to clean an air duct system with a regular vacuum. Air duct cleaning companies use special equipment that is designed to specifically clean air ducts. As a homeowner, one of the best things you can do to prevent pollutants from infiltrating your air ducts is regularly change your HVAC system’s air filters.

Is a professional air duct cleaning expensive?
The cost of air duct cleaning services varies. Factors that are taken into consideration when an air duct cleaning company provides you with a quote include the number of air ducts in your home, the age of your home, the length of time since the air ducts were last cleaned, the current condition of the air ducts, and more.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

Water-Damaged Carpet Is Ripe for Mold Growth

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Water-Damaged Carpet Is Ripe for Mold Growth Water-Damaged Carpet Is Ripe for Mold Growth

Wet carpet is at high risk of mold growth in Nacogdoches Texas.

For mold to grow, it needs oxygen, moisture, a surface to grow on, and a food source. Spores are commonly found in the air. If they land on damp or wet spots indoors, they feed on dust, and mold growth will occur very soon.

In the right conditions, area rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting provide a perfect breeding ground for mold. Carpet located below ground level in basements, as well as carpet that’s been wet for a period of time, and moist or damp carpeting, are at especially high risk of mold growth.

Just because mold is not immediately visible or apparent on carpeting doesn’t mean that growth is not in progress. Actually, mold is likely to only be visible on the surface of carpeting in severe infestations – as would commonly occur when the carpet has remained wet for some time after flooding.

Carpeting that has been subjected to flood damage or standing water usually needs to be disposed of because conditions are ripe for mold growth. Even if visible growth has not yet started, it’s highly probable that it will happen unless the carpeting is removed, cleaned and dried within 24 to 48 hours. Even then, removing it and cleaning it is not guaranteed to prevent mold growth.

So, when the unexpected strikes SERVPRO will be there to make it, “Like it never even happened.” Call us anytime 24/7 365 (936) 559-0404

Your AC unit and You: Can my AC cause mold or mildew?

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Your AC unit and You: Can my AC cause mold or mildew? Can my AC cause mold or mildew?

One of the most current questions that we get from Homeowners and Businesses alike is this: Can my AC cause mold or mildew in my area?

In the Lufkin / Nacogdoches area we are accustomed to having the AC unit on one day and the heater on the next; especially because Texas weather is just crazy sometimes.

A properly designed, installed, and maintained air conditioning system shouldn't cause mold or mildew, there are always rare exceptions to the rule but these are the most reported reasons for faulty AC units. However, while an oversize or improperly designed unit can cool your home slightly, it also runs the risk of not removing enough moisture out of the rooms air. Too much moisture in your home can increase the potential for mold growth. Mold spores grow on nearly every surface, we live with mold in the same way we live with bacteria. Just like bacteria though, there are perfect breeding environments that can and do yield a productive crop of molds that spread throughout the home or office setting. At times, these growths are not noticeable until the smell is strong or the appearance has reached an intolerable amount. Improper installation, lack of maintenance, and water drainage issues can also lead to biological growth. If you are someone who runs their AC unit every single day, it is a good rule of thumb to check your unit once every couple months to make sure that all lines are in safe condition, and there are not leaking water marks near the wall or on the adjacent ground.

And as always, if you suspect mold call us your local SERVPRO professionals at 936-637-0404.

A Thank You to all Firefighters

5/3/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage A Thank You to all Firefighters Firefighters, real life heroes in our communities. Thank you for you all that you do.

On May 4th, 2018 we will be celebrating International Firefighters Day (IFFD). It is a day to pay our respects to all the firefighters of the past and present who have, and continue to risk their lives.  Every firefighter, man or woman, deserves recognition.

The job of a firefighter is an extremely selfless job.  Often, the rewards a firefighter gets are not that of material possession.  It is an intangible reward.  It can be something as simple as the look in a survivors eyes whom they’ve helped rescue. Or a grateful, joyous smile of a child as a family is reunited, safe and sound.

As a firefighter, it can be a self-esteem boost to know that your actions have made a positive impact in another person’s life.  Few things can compare to the sense of pride in one’s community, to know that their constant efforts help to protect the community that they endear. This profession helps to create strong, informal leaders of mankind, and a parental figure to those in a time of need.

Although these rewards are not a physical possession to be held, they are much harder to obtain than diamonds. The value of such an internally personal reward cannot be measured by any current system in existence.  This is why we must take the time to pay homage to all of the men and women who constitute the firefighter departments around the world. For although we may not be able to give them anything of material possession, a showing of gratitude, respect, and a sincere appreciation is the least we can do for these extraordinary members of our society, whom help protect human lives all around the world.

So on behalf of all of us at SERVPRO of Lufkin/S. Nacogdoches County: thank you to all of the men and women who serve and protect their communities all over the world.

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU!

Fire Damage Fires Could Happen in Your Nacogdoches Home in an Instant The oven had only been left without supervision for no more than 15 minutes.

Leaving your oven on accidently can do more damage than you think.  Leaving the house with your oven on seems like something that most of us have done and will continue to do. A Nacogdoches family just recently had the worst-case scenario happen to them when they had left the oven on and left the house for no more than 15 minutes and it had erupted into flames. Luckily, they came back quickly and were able to stop it with a fire extinguisher. But if they had just simply left the house to go the grocery store and were gone for just 15 min more, their entire home could have been affected. Just remember to double check before leaving your home. Fire damage to your home could be detrimental but the restoration process begins when you call us, SERVPRO. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources. We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. Your Water Heater Flooded your Lufkin Home, Now What? Are Your Walls Wet? How Can You Tell?

2/8/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Your Water Heater Flooded your Lufkin Home, Now What? Are Your Walls Wet? How Can You Tell? SERVPRO uses the right equipment to identify affected materials. SERVPRO will check for the source of moisture in your home or business.

SERVPRO uses the right equipment to identify affected materials. SERVPRO will check for the source of moisture in your home or business.

Gypsum, aka “drywall,” is a very popular material for use in the construction of homes and offices. The material is noted for its strong fire-resistant qualities. However, drywall is also known to be incredibly susceptible to being damaged by moisture compared to many other building materials.

This is, in part, because drywall is extremely porous, readily absorbing moisture and retaining it. If the moisture content (%MC) of drywall exceeds even 1%, then the drywall can be considered “moisture-compromised” and in need of either drying or removal depending on whether or not mold has begun to grow.

Even greenboard, the “water-resistant” drywall, will be damaged by moisture if it gets past the green, water-resistant paper covering that gives greenboard its name. The majority of greenboard’s water resistance comes from the paper covering, not the drywall itself.

Because of how susceptible drywall is to becoming damaged by even minute amounts of moisture, it’s important to be able to accurately assess the amount of water present in drywall.

When looking for a moisture meter to use for testing drywall, some considerations include:

  • Whether or not the meter has a gypsum scale.
  • The range at which the meter detects moisture—the meter should be able to accurately detect very small amounts of moisture.
  • Length of the pins.
  • Additional scales for other materials—most professionals have to work with more than just drywall, so having a moisture meter with the ability to test other materials using different reading scales is a must.

In many cases, if there is significant moisture in a gypsum board, then there will be obvious external signs of it. For example, a simple visual inspection can be made to spot discolored or visibly crumbling drywall, or a musty odor can indicate a problem with mold growth.

We use specialized equipment to remove the remaining water that is harder to access. Our Professionals will use room measurements, temperature, and relative humidity to determine the optimal number of air movers and dehumidifiers needed to dry your business.

“Mold Removal” vs. Mold Remediation

Mold Remediation “Mold Removal” vs. Mold Remediation Coming Home From Vacation

What’s the Difference?

Since microscopic mold spores exist naturally almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors, removing all mold from a home or business is impossible. Many restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold. This is a fallacy. We understand mold and mold growth. SERVPRO of Lufkin / S. Nacogdoches County has the training and expertise to remediate the mold in your home or business.

Signs of Mold? Call Today – (936) 559-0404

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Preventing A Kitchen Fire

Fire Damage Preventing A Kitchen Fire Kitchen Fire In Lufkin

Did you know the kitchen is where more home fires occur than anywhere else in the house and that cooking is the number one cause of home fires? The American Red Cross has steps everyone can follow to avoid a cooking fire:

1. Never leave cooking food unattended – stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling or broiling food. If you have to leave the kitchen, even for a second, turn off the stove.

2. Check your food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while cooking.

3. Use a timer so you’ll remember that the stove or oven is on.

4. Don’t wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.

5. Keep the kids away from the cooking area. Enforce a “kid-free zone” and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove.

To learn how to prevent a fire in your home and how to keep members of your household safe, you can take our cooking safety quiz and download the Red Cross Fire Prevention and Safety Checklist. Downloadable fact sheets are also available on how to avoid home heating fires, candle safety, proper use of smoke alarms and teaching your children what to do in the event of a fire.

Does Your Lufkin Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/17/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Does Your Lufkin Home Have A Mold Problem? In Lufkin, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation. Serving all of Nacogdoches and Angelina County.

Fire Damage Need Smoke and Soot Cleanup in Lufkin or Nacogdoches? Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Lufkin or Nacogdoches Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of [[Franchise Name]] will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
